Tailoring an approach that works for you

In my 20 plus years of practice, I’ve tried many different tools and techniques to help my clients deal with mental health challenges and lead happier, more connected and fulfilling lives. The modalities you and I explore will be based on your challenges and goals. Here are some of the tools that I use most frequently:

Traditional and Cognitive Behavior Therapies

Traditional Talk Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are two forms of psychotherapy that are helpful in treating a wide variety of issues including depression, anxiety, addiction, and severe mental illnesses. In talk therapy, we work on minimizing or eliminating adverse behavioral symptoms in order to allow you to heal and function more effectively.  CBT is based on the belief that psychological problems stem at least in part from negative thinking. With CBT, you will gain skills to help you shift your thoughts so that you can better manage your behavior and response to any situation.

Mindfulness

Developing awareness is critical to health and well-being, whether it’s noticing unhelpful and inaccurate thoughts – or catching automatic behaviors that feel good in the moment, but actually end up making things worse. Mindfulness can be extremely helpful in managing anxiety, depression, addiction, and insomnia and in dealing with trauma and other extreme emotions.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a therapy based on the premise that where you look or gaze can affect how you feel. There’s increasing evidence that trauma is “stored” in the body and can alter your ability to access memories and emotions and impact your physical health. This process allows me to guide you, by the position of your eyes, to find your “brainspots” –   areas where trauma is stored so that you can access, process and overcome the negative emotions and physical and psychological pain.

Lifestyle

When it comes to maintaining good mental health, you can’t underestimate the importance of a holistic approach. Your brain is part of your physical body – and without proper nutrition, exercise, and rest, your brain simply can’t function the way it’s supposed to. Likewise, your environment plays an important role. Being isolated – or without positive influences – also drains energy and vitality. In our work together, we’ll look at lifestyle strategies and structures we can put in place to support your overall mental health and well-being.

Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

EFT is based on several alternative medical theories, including acupuncture and energy medicine. It’s based on the belief that negative emotions result from disruptions in your body’s energy system. The technique is deceptively simple and can be done anywhere. You simply tap on various acupressure meridians while making accepting statements to release blockages and allow energy to flow freely. It’s a highly effective technique for clearing out limiting beliefs making room for more positive thoughts to emerge.

Therapy Through Play

When I work with children suffering from emotional distress or trauma, play is an extremely useful technique. In fact, play is a critical component to human happiness and well-being. Playing is fun, encourages self-expression, fosters connections with others, and stimulates creative thinking. Through play, children discover they can talk about their experiences, express their feelings, and begin the healing process in a safe and supportive context.
